Uncensored Report: War and Occupation in the Middle East
Independent Journalist, Dahr Jamail, will give two lectures in Fairbanks:
Thursday, March 8: Pioneer Park Civic Center (sponsored by the Alaska Peace Center) and
Friday, March 9: UAF, Schaible Auditorium (sponsored by the UAFairbanks Coalition for Peace and Justice).
An hour long lecture will begin at 7 PM, to be followed by an hour or so of questions and answers.
Jamail has been to Fairbanks three times before and the peace community here is very pleased to announce his return. He will offer an update on the situation on the ground in Iraq, discussing in detail the construction of a massive US embassy and permanent military bases, as well as Iran and possible futures of the region.
Dahr Jamail is a Texas born mountain climber who lived in Anchorage when the United States invaded Iraq. Distrust of the information coming from the mainstream media prompted him to travel to Iraq to see and report what was actually happening. From November 2003 – February 2005, Jamail spent a total of 8 months in occupied Iraq as one of the few independent US journalists in that country. His coverage of the siege on Fallujah in November of 2004 contributed to the eventual exposure of the US use of illegal weapons—including the incendiary white phosphorous. Though he intended to return to Iraq, his interpreters felt strongly that it was too dangerous (for him and for them) to work with him there. Since then, Jamail has reported from Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. He has continued to work with contacts in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East and together they publish in several media outlets, including the Inter Press Service, The Asia Times, The Nation, Tom Paine, and others. He also reports for Democracy Now! and the BBC. NPR interviewed him regarding the condition of hospitals in Baghdad (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6567172).
Jamail is currently working on a book, Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq, which will be published this summer. He uses a website (http://www.DahrJamailIraq.com) and a popular mailing list to disseminate his dispatches.
He will be speaking in Anchorage on March 10.
